Sažetak
Until now, the phytosociological research of the Nerio oleandri-Tamaricetea africanae Braun-Blanq. et O.Bolos 1958 class was sporadic in Croatia (cf. Jasprica et al. 2007). There is not enough documentation on the results of these investigations, and the floristic composition and distribution of the associations were mostly unknown. We investigated the vegetation of the Nerio oleandri-Tamaricetea africanae class in the period from 2006 to 2009 in the southeastern Adriatic, from northern Dalmatia (Croatia) into the south of Albania. Associations with Dalmatian tamarisks (Tamarix dalmatica B. R. Baum) belonged to the new vegetation alliance - Tamaricion dalmaticae (Jasprica et al. 2008). We determined two associations within the Nerio oleandri-Tamaricetea africanae class on the Pelješac Peninsula: Rubo ulmifolii-Nerietum oleandri O. Bolos 1956 in Orebić, and Rubo ulmifolii-Viticetum agni-casti Paradis 2006 (=Rubo dalmaticae-Viticetum agni-casti Lakušić p.p.) in Ston. The floristic composition of the associations Rubo ulmifolii-Nerietum oleandri and Rubo ulmifolii-Viticetum agni-casti from the Pelješac Peninsula are presented in Table 1. The Rubo ulmifolii-Nerietum oleandri and Rubo ulmifolii-Viticetum agni-casti associations are included in the Rubo ulmifolii-Nerion oleandri O. Bolos 1985 alliance and the Tamaricetalia africanae Braun-Blanq. et O. Bolos 1958 em. Izco et al. 1984 order. The Rubo ulmifolii-Nerietum oleandri association is common along temporary watercourses in the Mediterranean, however, it was discovered for the first time in Croatia. Syntaxonomic position of these associations is presented as follows: NERIO OLEANDRI-TAMARICETEA AFRICANAE Braun-Blanq. et O.Bolos 1958 ; Tamaricetalia africanae Braun-Blanq. et O. Bolos 1958 em. Izco et al. 1984 ; Rubo ulmifolii-Nerion oleandri O. Bolos 1985 ; Rubo ulmifolii-Nerietum oleandri O. Bolos 1956 ; Rubo ulmifolii-Viticetum agni-casti Paradis 2006 (=Rubo dalmaticae-Viticetum agni-casti Lakušić p.p. In the Croatian National Habitat Classification (2005), associations with Chaste Tree (Vitex agnus-castus L.) are incorrectly included within thermophilous flooded thickets. The Nerio oleandri-Tamaricetea africanae class was not included at all in the book „ The Plant Communities of Croatia“ (Trinajstić 2008), while its associations were provisionally included within the Populetalia albae Braun-Blanq. 1931 order and the Populion albae Braun-Blanq. 1931 alliance. The present findings have contributed to better understanding this vegetation in Croatia and in this part of the Balkans. During 2009, we investigated stands with oleander (Nerium oleander L.) on the southern slopes of the Monte Vipera mountain (near village of Podgorje) above town of Orebić. We proposed these stands as the subassociation Fraxino orni-Quercetum cocciferae (Horvatić 1958) Trinajstić 1984 nerietosum oleandri Jasprica et Ruščić 2009. Floral composition of both subassociations (subass. typicum and subass. nerietosum oleandri) is given in Table 2. Synmatxonomic position of these subassociations is presented as follows: QUERCETEA ILICIS Braun-Blanq. 1947 ; Quercetalia ilicis H-ić 1958 ; Quercion ilicis Braun-Blanq. (1931) 1936 ; Fraxino orni-Quercetum cocciferae (Horvatić 1958) Trinajstić 1984 ; Fraxino orni-Quercetum cocciferae (Horvatić 1958) Trinajstić 1984 subass. typicum Jasprica et Ruščić 2009 ; Fraxino orni-Quercetum cocciferae (Horvatić 1958) Trinajstić 1984 subass. nerietosum oleandri Jasprica et Ruščić 2009. The nerietosum oleandri subassociation is found at altitudes between 200 and 450 m on carbonaceous substrata derived from Cretaceous and Eocene limestone. It exclusively prefers a southern aspect and a slope of 40 – 80°. This association is similar to fairly sparse low forests with shrub layers covering 40 – 80% of the surface. The habitats are not exposed to disturbances. Stands with oleander from the locality Podgorje near Orebić were included in the Croatian National Ecological Network (2007). These stands are very valuable habitats. In fact, those included as protected areas in the “ NATURA 2000” network must be protected according to international obligations.
