Sažetak
Introduction: Breast cancer is the most common malignancy and the one of the leading cause cancer mortality in women. Numerous studies have attempted to identify epidemiological parameters, treatment, risk and prognostic factors, but the magnitude of these associations remains inconsistent. The aim of the study: We want to analyze the breast cancer patients hospitalized at the Department of Oncology and Radiotherapy, Clinical Hospital Center in Rijeka from 1997 to 2001. Patients and methods: During these five years in 477 breast cancer patients gender, age, family history, tumor localization, size, tumor histology, hormonal status, recidives and metastases were investigated. Results: The women predominantly suffered of breast cancer (98, 53%). The average age was from 69-80 years. 15, 10% of there family (mother or sisters) have a history of breast cancer. 86, 58% were menopausal women. The tumor was localized in the left breast of 52, 41% of patients, while 32, and 91% in the second quadrant. 211 of patients (44, 24%) had a tumor size from 2, 1-5 cm. The predominant pathohistologycal type of malignant tumor was ductal invasive cancer (88, 88%). The predominant grade was grade II (59, 33%). 86, 58% were postmenopausal women. In 8% of patients the recidive was determined, while metastases were determined in 41, 72% of patients, predominantly in bones (23, 48%). Conclusion: Our results clearly demonstrate that breast cancer still represents a huge problem in Croatia with great morbidity and mortality, and that a lot of efforts should be done to increase the cure rate in early stages and prolong the survival in advanced disease.
