Sažetak
The muscle structure and the activity of lactate dehydrogenase and succinate dehydrogenase were investigated in the samples of m. biceps brachii, m. brachialis, m. triceps brachii (caput longum), m. semimembranosus, m. semitendinosus, m. quadriceps femoris (m. rectus femoris) and m. gluteobiceps obtained from 10 fallow does (Dama dama) aged 16 to 20 months. The fallow deer muscles were found to contain muscle fibers of oxidative, oxidative-glycolytic and glycolytic type, varying in diameter and separated by connective tissue partitions into muscle bundles of a variable size. The fiber of greatest diameter were found to be located peripherally in the muscle bundle (m. semimembranosus and m. brachialis), or mainly peripherally, along with the fiber of smaller diameter (m. semitendinosus and m. gluteobiceps), or in part peripherally and in part centrally in the muscle bundle (m. triceps brachii – caput longum, m. biceps brachii and m. rectus femoris). In all study muscles, oxidative fiber had smallest diameter (15-95 mm, mean 43.01-55.98 mm), were fewest in number (6.72%-14.62%), and covered only 4.75%-10.11% of the muscle section area. Oxidative-glycolytic fibers were most abundant (53.60%-71.03%), of intermediate size (diameter 5-110 mm, mean 49.70-64.75 mm), and covered 40.00%-70.93% of the muscle section area. Glycolytic fibers had largest diameter (25-130 mm, mean 55.23-72.81 mm), accounted for 18.28%-39.90% of total muscle fiber, and covered 21.08%-49.89% of the muscle section area. Glycolytic and oxidative-glycolytic fibers as fast fibers were most abundant (85.38%-93.28%), whereas slow fibers were present in a substantially lower proportion that varied among different muscles (6.72%-14.62%), indicating a high ability of the study muscles for fast retreat in case of peril. The rate of aerobic (oxidative and oxidative-glycolytic) and anaerobic (glycolytic and oxidative-glycolytic) fibers was 41.42%-47.80% and 52.20%-58.58%, respectively, suggesting the study muscles to be characterized by a uniform ability to utilize oxidative phosphorylation and anaerobic glycolysis as needed, to produce the energy necessary for muscle contraction.
