Sažetak
This paper deals with the concept of creativity in pre-service teaching of L2 students of English. Creativity is dealt with from two points of view: creativity in organizing learning activities and creativity in the learner language use. Creativity is often mentioned as one of the characteristics of a good language teacher. A good language teacher is expected not only to use the procedures and activities that are previously set by the teaching method and the textbook author but to develop his/her own teaching activities and materials that will meet the needs and interests of a particular class.Foreign language learning is a complex process where a learner is expected to develop the ability to use the linguistic code successfully in different natural settings. To develop such an ability the learner is to be provided with the opportunities to use the target language in the classroom not only as a code and as content but as a skill and a means of communication. Therefore, present day teaching strategies and corresponding teaching materials aim at engaging learners in such speech situations where they would practice real use of language, i.e. use language creatively, rather than only practice the (re)production of accurate grammatical structures. To meet these needs foreign language teachers are expected to provide their learners with the conditions (i.e. activities) for real communication where negotiation of meaning will take place. This paper tries to investigate to what extent student teachers are creative in the organisation of teaching/learning activities and to what extent student teacher-created activites enable learners to use language creatively.A body of student teachers' formal lesson plans in analysed in terms of the authorship of the activities they contain (student teacher- or other- originated activites). The student teacher-originated activities are classified with respect to their communicative value. Based on the findings, student teacher teaching strategies are described in terms of the amount of creativity that is present in achieving the lesson overall goal in general and different lesson objectives in particular.
