Sažetak
Introduction: Various methods have explored the relationships and differences between schizophrenia and depression. In particular, electroencephalographic studies have indicated significant alterations in schizophrenia (between 5 and 80 percent of schizophrenic patients have an altered EEG) and depression (20 to 40 percent of depressed patients have an altered EEG). Research using qEEG has similarly shown altered parameters in both schizophrenia and depression. Since there have been few research attempts comparing patients with schizophrenia and depression using the qEEG parameters, the aim of the present research is to conduct such a comparison. Methods: A qEEG was administered with 20 patients with schizophrenia and 20 patients with depression, diagnosed according to DSM-IV classification. The EEG was recorded from frontal (Fp1, Fp2, F3, F4), temporal (F7, F8, T3, T4), parietal (P3, P4) and occipital (O1, O2) regions. The Fast Fourier Transformation (FFT) method was used to analyse a 10 second period, artefact free. Absolute spectral power (µ ; ; ; V² ; ; ; ) was assessed in the delta (0.5 – 4.0), theta (4.0 – 8.0), alpha (8.0 – 13.0) and beta (13.0 – 30.0) ranges. Results: Results indicate a difference between schizophrenia and depression in the delta and theta rhythms (especially over the frontal regions). Furthermore, in comparison to patients with diagnosed depression, the results indicate a global decrease in alpha activity among patients with diagnosed schizophrenia. Discussion: An important finding stemming from the present research is the increased delta activity among patients with schizophrenia in comparison to those with diagnosed depression. This and other results from this study were compared and interpreted in the context of the neuroradiological and neurotransmitter studies of schizophrenia and depression, thus confirming the biological foundation of schizophrenia and depression. Also discussed are indications that, along the depression– 'negative' schizophrenia– 'positive' schizophrenia continuum, differences between subtypes of schizophrenia are larger than those between depression and 'negative' schizophrenia.
