Sažetak
The applicability of modern software in the design and production of castings was considered. The emphasis was placed on the test of reliability of solidification simulation with prediction of possible shrinkage defects in castings in the form of shrinkage cavities or finely dispersed porosity structure. The selected example was the housing of a fluid flow measuring device, made of WCB steel, according to ASTM A216, and cast in synthetic bentonite sand mould with core, made in a CO2 procedure using water glass as binder. Feeding and gating system were designed in a standard manner. The results of radiographic examinations and destructive testing of castings were compared with the results of solidification simulation of the 3D casting model. The values obtained confirm the great reliability of numerical simulation of solidification process in predicting possible shrinkage defects in a casting. They also indicate the necessity of timely engagement of a foundrymen in designing and construction of casting products in order to avoid additional customer complaints and expensive redesigning of models and castings.
Application of the numerical simulation software for pouring and solidification of castings in jobbing foundries is particularly desirable due to a great number of positions and materials. On the other hand relatively expensive software and the necessity of the basic training of operators (methods engineers) represent a great financial burden. Therefore establishing of a centre for numerical simulation asserts itself as a logical and appropriate solution.
