Sažetak
Fusarium verticillioides is one of the most significant causal agents of maize ear rot in Croatia. In 2005 a trial was conducted to determine eventual correlation between pericarp thickness and susceptibility to Fusarium ear rot on 19 Croatian maize hybrids and 31 inbred lines. After injecting F. verticillioides spore suspension through the husks, ear rot severity modes on tested genotypes ranged between 2 and 6 on 1-7 scale. 8 inbred lines and 2 hybrids showed low susceptibility to Fusarium ear rot (mode 2), while 11 lines were highly susceptibile (mode 6). Mean ranks of ear rot severity were significantly different among tested genotypes (Kruskal-Wallis test, H=574.93, P<0.0001). Pericarp thickness measured on different positions on kernels with 13 % moisture was significantly different between tested genotypes, with mean values between 150.87 μ m and 93.48 μ m. Correlation between pericarp thickness and Fusarium ear rot severity was low, with Spearman correlation coefficients -0.0663 (P=0.78) for hybrids of FAO 300 group, 0.4478 (P=0.08) for hybrids of FAO 400 group, 0.2582 (P= 0.74) for hybrids of FAO 500 group, 0.2236 (P=0.72) for hybrids of FAO 600 group, -0.1573 (P=0.53) for all hybrids, -0.0256 (P=0.89) for inbred lines and -0.0596 (P=0.68) for all tested genotypes when all data was analysed together. Results of the present study indicate that maize pericarp thickness does not contribute to Fusarium ear rot resistance in the environmental conditions of northern Croatia.
