AIM: To evaluate the incidence of biopsy-proven glomerulopathy from the largest Nephropathology center in Croatia during period 2003-2007. METHODS: The patients data were obtained from Kidney biopsy registry at Department of Pathology Dubrava University Hospital, Zagreb. All biopsies were analyzed by light, immunofluorescence and electron microscopy. RESULTS: A total of 526 native kidney biopsies from 490 patients were evaluated. The mean patients age was 47 years. There were 320 male and 206 female patients. The diagnosis of glomerular disease was established in 398 patients. Glomerular diseases were diagnosed 1.5x more frequently in male then female patients. IgA nephropathy, focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) and membranous glomerulonephritis (MGN), the three most commonly diagnosed glomerular diseases, also represents the most common glomerular diseases in male patients. The most common glomerular diseases in female patients were FSGS, lupus nephritis and IgA nephropathy. Membranoproliferative GN was 5.5x more common in male than female patients, as well as IgA nephropathy (2.5x), diabetic nephropathy (1.9x), FSGS (1.6x) and MGN (1.4x). In contrast, diagnosis of thin basement membranes was 8.6x, lupus nephritis 4.6x and minimal change disease was 3x more frequently established in female patients. CONCLUSION: With IgA nephropathy as a leading glomerulopathy in our material, Croatian study is comparable to similar studies from other European countries (Italy, Spain, Check Republic) (1, 2). 1.
