Sažetak
This paper deals with teaching culture in a foreign language classroom from the perspective of student teachers of English as a foreign language. The first part of the paper gives a short overview of the history of culture teaching in the foreign language curriculum. A particular attention is paid to current understanding of cultural competence as a constituent part of non-native speaker's communicative competence. The second part of the paper deals with the practical aspects of culture teaching, i.e. with methods and techniques that are used to achieve the goals of culture teaching. The aim of the paper is to get insight into Croatian student teachers' practices in teaching foreign language culture. A body of foreign language student teachers' lesson plans is analysed in terms of the goals of culture teaching and the organization of activities by means of which the goals were to be achieved. Student teachers' reports on the process of lesson planning and delivery are analysed as well. Based on the obtained data, the nature of culture teaching strategies is described in terms of the factors that influenced student teachers' selection and use of strategies. A classification of methods and techniques with respect to different goals of culture teaching is made as well. The results obtained by this research show that culture teaching is a complex activity which requires not only the teacher's well- developed cultural competence but his/her well-developed ability to provide conditions for culture learning to take place.
