Sažetak
Chronic exposure of β 2-adrenoreceptor stimulants clenbuterol (CL) and salbutamol (SAL) have been shown to mediate anabolic effects that lead to some physiologic modifications in target tissues and biological fluids of many animal species. Due to different oral bioavailability and rates of elimination of CL and SAL in mammals, the aim of study was to investigate the effect of repeated anabolic dose of CL and SAL (2.5 mg/kg body mass, orally, daily) on plasma biochemical parameters and on liver histology of white adult male mice (BALB/c), upon cessation of 28-day treatment. Study results showed a significantly higher (p<0.0005 and p<0.001) plasma alkaline phosphatase activity (126.4± ; ; ; 10.8 IU/L and 90.3± ; ; ; 9.1 IU/l) in mice treated with CL and SAL, respectively, while the levels of aspartate and alanine transaminases, triglycerides and glucose failed to demonstrate any significant variation. Histopathologically, the 28-day CL and SAL administration induces mild vacuolar hepatocyte degeneration. Histochemistry revealed decreased hepatocyte glycogen accumulation and medium to and medium/low rate of PAS-positive granules recorded on day 0 after cessation of treatment. Although current exposure induced no significant differences in plasma biochemical and liver histology between mice treated with either β 2-adrenoreceptor stimulant, the biochemical and histologic changes observed should be taken in consideration on assessing their adverse effects on liver function after repeated anabolic dose.
