Sažetak
Bone morphogenetic proteins play a pivotal role in kidney development and postnatal function. Numerous members of the BMP family are expressed during embryonic development of the kidney, of which BMP-4 and BMP-7 are most highly pronounced. The expression of mRNA of BMPs remains even in the adult life. Experimental animal models of acute ischemic and nephrotoxic renal injury and chronic 5/6 nephrectomy renal injury as well as the unilateral ureteral obstruction have all shown beneficial effect of BMP-7 in ameliorating the severity of damage inflicted to the kidney tissue. The fact that BMP-7 expression remains high both in the fetal and in the postnatal life, and is available in the circulation, coupled with the results of aforementioned studies and the fact that BMP-7 receptors located in the kidney possess a high degree of specificity, suggests that BMP-7 and other BMPs may have a systemic function and a role in the repair and regeneration of the adult kidney.
