Sažetak
Introduction: Peak bone density is an important determinant of osteoporotic fracture risk and it is known that it tends to be higher in men than in women. Objective: The aim of the study was to explore whether peak bone density is achieved at different time at different skeletal regions in young men and women. The influence of nutrition and physical activity on bone mass was analyzed, too. Materials and Methods: The study group comprised 51 male and 75 female students, aged 19 to 25 years. Bone mineral density was measured using dual energy x-ray absorptiometry in spine, total femur and distal third of radius. Dietary data were assessed using specially designed semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire. Bone mineral density (BMD ; g/cm2) was higher in boys comparing to girls at the all measured sites, while bone mineral apparent density (BMAD ; g/cm3) was higher in girls. Age was negatively correlated with bone mineral density in all measured sites except in the spine in male students. Sodium, protein and fibers were nutrients significantly correlated with bone mineral density. Conclusions: The later achievement of peak bone denisty in men than in women is most prominent in spine. In our study group, this difference could not be explained by different nutrition or the level of physical activity.
