Sažetak
We report the case of a three year old male dog living in a rural region of Daruvar, Croatia on the banks of the fish pond Koncanica who presented with a subcutaneous tumor like swelling. Due to the large size of the lump the owner seek for veterinary assistance. After general anesthesia the swelling was excised and the contents was thoroughly removed. The contents reminded adipose tissue. Detailed examination of the contents unexpectedly revealed parasitic involvement. Morphologic examination led to diagnosis of subcutaneous dirofilariasis due to Dirofilaria repens (D. repens) that was also confirmed by PCR. Following this interesting case, the author conducted a small epidemiological survey. The survey revealed that the owner had other three dogs sharing same conditions of constant exposition to mosquitoes. In order to define the prevalence of microfilariae, all dogs were bled. The blood was examined morphologically after modified Knotts procedure. Unexpectedly, all dogs were microfilaraemic. The PCR defined the presence of D. repens. This case is a reminder that this parasitic disease is present in this part of Croatia too and that could be also a serious risk for the owners that live in the same conditions concerning the abundancy of vectors. Treatment of canine dirofilariois due to Dirofilaria repens is needed for dogs suffering from clinical signs of this disease, such as dermal swelling, sub-cutaneous nodules and pruritus. It is also important in order to decrease the risk of infection to other dogs and humans in the vicinity of the infected animal when suitable mosquito vectors are present. Further research is absolutely needed in order to reveal the importance and epidemiology of this emerging infection especially the mosquito vector in Croatia
