Sažetak
Propolis is natural source of biologically very active compounds. From historical ethnomedicine date to nowadays, propolis activity is very well documented, and many scientific data confirm the use of propolis as natural antibiotic, as well. Various flavonoid-aglycones, derivatives of cinnamic and other acids, prenylated derivatives of p-coumaric acid, diterpens, lignans, essential oil compounds, and others have been confirmed to have alone or in synergistic combinations in extracts (mainly in ethanol) bactericidal, fungicidal and virucidal activity against human opportunistic and/or pathogen microbes. This review will focus on data recently published about antimicrobial activity of propolis extracts from various eco-systems (especially against dental-plaque forming streptococci), mechanism(s) of bactericidal activity as well as synergism with antibiotics ; spectrum of antifungal activity of propolis (against yeasts, dermatophytes and moulds) and progress in antiviral activity research.
