Sažetak
Based on the linear measurements taken from the skulls of 35 European brown bears (Ursus arctos) and 28 cave bears (Ursus spelaeus), 13 original mathematical formulas were applied to obtain indices, which were then used in discriminant function analysis. It was concluded that the indices with most prominent discriminant values can be used for differentiation of the two species from their skeletal remains. For the three best fitted formulas (fraction of the squared cranial length and least cranial breadth ; fraction of the squared zygomatic breadth and least cranial breadth ; and fraction of the squared interorbital breadth and least cranial breadth) the probability of correct species grouping based on the discriminant function analysis is 95.1%.
