Sažetak
Austro-Croatian bilateral project entitled „ Linking strategies in freshwater crayfish conservation between Austria and Croatia“ was conducted during years 2006-2007. The cooperative research included streams within the Nature Park Medvednica and some water bodies within the Plitvice Lakes National Park (Croatia) and several water bodies in the region Tyrol (Austria). Project aimed to address biology and ecology of the stone crayfish, (Austropotamobius torrentium), white-clawed crayfish (A. pallipes) and the noble crayfish (Astacus astacus) which are all native European species living in Croatian, as well as in Austrian freshwaters. The joint work of Croatian and Austrian scientists has helped to improve and standardize research methodology on crayfish biology and ecology. We compiled protocols for morphometrical measurements, habitat characterization and epibiont collection. Application of these new protocols gives comparable and reliable data on phenotypical characteristics of three crayfish species, divergence of populations and their phylogenetic relations, their habitat preferences and epibiont infestation. Recording of physical and chemical parameters enabled monitoring of different regimes at studied locations and evaluation of their impact on population parameters and reproductive success of the crayfish population, both in Croatia and Austria. Gained knowledge on the stone crayfish populations within the NP Medvednica is of great importance for management and conservation plans in the Park. Accordingly, research that has been done at the Archbach River in Tyrol indicated that anthropogenic impacts and habitat destructions diminished stone crayfish population and enabled white-clawed crayfish to prevail in the new changed habitat. Ongoing restauration activities accompanied with a species protection programme give raise to hope for improving the situation. In summary, our collaborate activities developed into positive reactions from scientific, governmental and social levels.
