Sažetak
Solid state transitions of surfactant crystals were investigated. On heating, they usually undergo polymorphic and liquid crystalline phase transtions. On cooling, most surfactant crystals underwent reversibly the isotropic liquid-liquid crystalline transition, while crystallization from melted samples was kinetically controlled.
Thermal behavior of solid crystallline surfactants depends on molecular packing properties, which include length, branching, and unsaturation of a hydrocarbon chain, polar head group, and counterion size.
