Sažetak
Under stress, human organism redistributes its energy resources in the anticipation of an incoming threat. Systems which are needed for the immediate reaction (locomotory and sensory) are activated to their full extent, while secondary systems (digestive, immune, reproductive, etc.) are temporarily depressed. This is advantageous if the threat is real, but if the redistribution of energy lasts for too long, or is repeated too often, damages to depressed systems may occur. Epidemiological studies conducted during past years clearly demonstrated a link between stress and the development and course of many diseases, but molecular mechanisms linking stress and its consequences are still mostly unknown. Glycoconjugates and their receptors lectins appear to be involved in this process, and the intensive investigation that is currently under way in many laboratories will hopefully enable us to understand the stress and its biochemical consequences better.
