Sažetak
The article gives an overview of the development of Croatian children's literature through drawing parallels with literary occurrences in world literature for children. One hundred and fifty years of children's literature is divided into four periods. Each period closely presents the work of one or two writers who gave a significant contribution to the period. For example, the 19th century emphasized the role of poet Ivan Filipović as the creator of Croatian children’ s literature. Both the good and bad sides of his influence in the development of that segment of literature are emphasized. In the first half of the 20th century, Ivana Brlić Mažuranić wrote her first stories, which even today are considered the highest quality texts in Croatian children’ s literature of fantastic discourse. Mato Lovrak authored the type of children’ s novel which Erich Kastner established in Europe. At the beginning of the 20th century, Ivan Kušan, took a step forward in the children’ s novel, releasing it from any engagement and made it entirely familiar to the modern child. At the same time, children’ s poetry underwent its renaissance with the poet Grigor Vitez. During the 70s, Zvonimir Balog imposed himself with his playful poetics in poetry and prose and clearly influenced the creations of his contemporaries. The end of the century is marked by an assortment of varieties of narrative structures, varieties of narrative techniques and disintegration of almost all taboo topics in children’ s literature.
