Sažetak
Carnival is a regular, cyclical state of exception, an annual interregnum regulated by tradition. The sovereign does not proclaim it, though he can try to place a ban on Carnival. Carnival is a simulated, ritualized and controlled justitium, a mock mourning. The practice of annual renewal is based on human understanding of time ; it precedes religious and political systems. The mythical and extra-historical Carnival interregnum cannot be cancelled — it can only be replaced by a genuine, historical interregnum.
