Sažetak
The solid waste of the city of Zagreb (Croatia) is disposed of directly onto the highly permeable alluvial sediments on the Jakusevec landfill, which is situated only few kilometres upstream of a protected groundwater zone. This study aimed at assessing the transport of contaminants from the landfill into the adjacent aquifer and comprised the determination of a broad spectrum of inorganic and organic constituents in solid waste, soil and groundwater. It was shown that the total concentrations of contaminants decrease drastically from the solid waste to the soil in the unsaturated zone. By contrast, the differences in contaminant concentrations for water-leachable fractions are less expressed, indicating an efficient transport between disposed waste and underlying soils by vertical infiltration of landfill leachate. The groundwater below the landfill was therefore heavily polluted. Further attenuation of the contamination in the aquifer was relatively efficient, depending on the pollutant types and redox conditions in the leachate plume. The preferential direction of contaminant spreading was toward the protected groundwater zone.
