Sažetak
A recently emerging body of literature suggests that the intake of calcium and/or dairy products may protect humans against the development of obesity. Therefore, we investigated differences in intakes of calcium and dairy products according to BMI in women aged 45 years and older. Participants were 125 women who were age range 46-93 years. Dietary calcium intake was assessed with a validated food frequency questionnaire. Anthropometric measurements were done by trained study personnel and BMI was computed. Subjects were divided into 2 categories based on their BMI: BMI<25 kg/m2 (40 % of participants) and BMI≥ 25 kg/m2 (60% of participants). Dietary calcium intake was higher in group of participants with lower BMI (959 mg vs. 940 mg) but there was no statistically significant difference in calcium intake between these two groups. Participants with BMI<25 kg/m2 consume on an average 2.0 servings of diary products per day while participants with BMI≥ 25kg/m2 consume less of the same products per day (1.7 servings). Proportion of subjects who consumed less than one serving of diary products daily was bigger in the group of participants with BMI≥ 25 kg/m2 (29%) than in the group with BMI<25 kg/m2 (16%). Moreover, 22% of participants from BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2 group and 24% of subjects in BMI<25 kg/m2 group consume more than 2.5 servings of diary products per day. In conclusion, we didn’ t find difference in the dietary calcium intake considering BMI of participants in this age group although dietary calcium intake was above current Croatian recommendations. More researches should be conducted to confirm our present findings.
