Sažetak
The binding of metal ions by proteins and peptides is of fundamental interest due to the importance of metal ions in biological systems. It is well known that metal ions may be a part of the active sites of enzymes, stabilize the macromolecular structure of proteins and affect enzymes or membranes to control cell metabolism. Therefore, for many years there has been a great interest in the study of metal complexes that are able to mimic these active sites in metalloproteins. Pyridinecarboxamides, picolinamide, nicotinamide and isonicotinamide, are a class of various medicinal agents. Picolinamide and nicotinamide are vital components of drugs in treating diabetes type 1, pellagra and radio- and chemosensitization while for isonicotinamide a strong anti-pyretic, fibrinolytic and anti-bacterial properties were confirmed. As the metal complexes with biologically important ligands are very often more effective than the uncoordinated ligands, the d-block metal complexes of the pyridincarboxamides have been widely investigated. The focus of our ongoing research is on mixed-ligand metal complexes, namely thiocyanato, azido and cyanato complexes of the late 3d-metals as well as group 12 metals with all of three pyridincarboxamide isomers. Curiously, until now there is no data regarding these ternary systems metal-pseudohalide-pyridinecarboxamide although for all of aforementioned pseudohalides various biological activities were revealed. We believe that this new look on such type of complexes could be a source of valuable informations for molecular recognition processes and, moreover, by the more systematic approach we could understand the relevance of inter-ligand interactions on structure-properties-function relationship. The synthesis and structural cahracterization of cobalt(II), nickel(II), copper(II), zinc(II), cadmium(II) and mercury(II) thiocyanate complexes with picolinamide, nicotinamide and isonicotinamide will be discussed.
