Sažetak
I have discussed a notorious problem with the description of Pyrrhonian skepticism as is found in the writings of its main representative Sextus Empiricus. The problem is this. There are three notions that centrally characterize the Pyrrhonian skepticism: the notion of inquiry, of suspension of judgment and of tranquility. The consistent account of Pyrrhonian project should successfully integrate these notions. That is, it should present the Pyrrhonian skeptics as perpetual inquirers who suspend judgment about everything and achieve the state of tranquility or peace of mind. However, it is not prima facie obvious how this can be done, and how these notions fit together. I have contrasted two accounts of what it is that the Pyrrhonists are actually doing, which differ in a way in which they incorporate these notions. According to the first account, the Pyrrhonists (1) are searching for truth with the hope of becoming tranquil ; (2) feel forced to suspend judgment ; (3) discover that suspension is accompanied by tranquility ; (4) discover that holding beliefs [of a relevant kind] generates disturbance (5) live without beliefs [of a relevant kind]. According to the second account, the Pyrrhonists are not searching for truth ; their goal is to remove the sources of disturbance, i.e. beliefs [of a relevant kind]. Hence, they are not “ inquirers” because they are engaged in a perpetual search for truth but because they are constantly involved in setting out counterarguments. Suspension of judgment is a stable disposition, a part of the skeptics’ “ way of life” .
