Sažetak
The aim of this study was to establish endotoxin levels in settled dust samples from the workplaces and households of librarians, and to evaluate these results with regard to the prevalence of sick building syndrome (SBS) symptoms. Endotoxin levels were measured using the LAL bioassay in 10 dust samples from one library and in 69 samples from the households of librarians working in that library. Data on occupational SBS-related irritative eye and respiratory symptoms were collected using a standard questionnaire in 69 librarians. Forty-five out of 69 subjects (65.2%) reported the presence of one or more work-related symptoms (eye irritation 61%, throat irritation 38%, sneezing 32%, nose irritation 30%, cough 16%, and cold 14%). Endotoxin levels were similar in dust samples from the library and households of librarians (median 15.9 EU/mg vs. 18.5 EU/mg, respectively ; P=0.1703). Our results suggest that occupational exposure to endotoxin cannot explain the occurrence of SBS symptoms in librarians.
