Sažetak
Background and purpose: It has been observed that vaccination of chickens with oil-vaccines generated a humoral immune response different than that usual for primary or secondary response. The purpose of this study is an analysis of antibody production in chickens receiving oil-vaccines for primary vaccination as well as revaccination after priming with live vaccines. Material and methods: Oil-vaccines were prepared in the form of water-in-oil-in-water emulsion of known composition and characteristics. The vaccine contained surface proteins of Newcastle disease and infectious bronchitis viruses and whole particles of egg drop syndrome and infectious bursal disease viruses. Humoral immune response of both light and heavy chickens, generated by WOWE vaccines, was monitored during the post-vaccination period of 48 weeks. Results: The vaccination of chickens with oil-adjuvanted viral vaccines generated a progressive increase in antibody production which declined after reaching a maximum level. Minimum antibody production was observed in the post-vaccination period between 18 and 23 weeks in light chickens and between 14 and 18 weeks post-vaccination in heavy chickens. Afterwards, antibody levels increased again. The second antibody level peak was reached in light chickens between 35 and 38 weeks post-vaccination and between 23 and 31 weeks post-vaccination in heavy chickens. The followin decrease in antibody levels was more progressive in light than that in heavy chickens. Generally, the pattern of chicken antibody response against oil-adjuvanted vaccines was similar within the same line, regardless of the fact that different doses of viruses or viral subunits were administered for primary vaccination as well as boostering. Conclusion: The evidence that the second enhancement of antibody production, following vaccination with oil-vaccines, is not triggered by physiological and environmental factors favors our assumption that oil-formulation increased immunogenicity of viral vaccines.
