Sažetak
Epilepsy comprises a group of diseases marked by the repetition of a certain type of seizures with episodic, but often also by chronic mental changes and pathologically distorted EEG. The main aim of treatment is the primary seizure prevention. While the development and invention of entirely new antiepileptic drugs is one of the strategies in the battle against this disease, it has been attempted to improve pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties of the known antiepileptics. Such drugs are more efficient, better tolerated and with less side effects in comparison with old formulations. Thus, in recent years a new version of valproate has emerged on the market. Valproate with extended release of the active substance is a wide-range antiepileptic. Its efficacy has been confirmed in several clinical studies. This work clearly shows pharmacologic characteristics and clinical efficacy of valproate with extended release of the active substance.
