Sažetak
Medicinal plants from the Mediterranean part of Croatia are for years traditionally used in our folk medicine due to their potential positive effect on human health. Numerous studies have already proved that some stilbene polyphenols, especially resveratrol (trans-3, 5, 4'-trihydroxystilbne), have good antioxidative, cardioprotective, antiinflammatory, and antitumour properties. This study aimed to research the potential of Salviae officinalis L., one of the most famous inhabitants of Dalmatian karst, as a source of resveratrol and its derivatives. The impact of maceration time (plant material-solvent contact time), temperature, stirring and ultrasonication on the efficiency the extraction of stilbenes was analyzed, too. Total phenols, flavonoids and nonflavonids were analyzed by Folin-Ciocalteu method. The separation and quantification of stilbenes was done by HPLC-RP-PAD, using internal standard method. The results of investigations strongly indicate that resveratrol or its hydroxy or methoxy derivatives are present in row plant material as glucosides. Free resveratrol monomers, if found, were present in very small amounts. Using conventional solvent extraction the best effect was obtained at 60 °C in duration of 60 minutes. Stirring didn’ t improve the effect of extraction. Increase of temperature from 60 to 75 °C resulted with almost 2xfolds higher level of stilbene polyphenols in extract. While with ultrasonication-assisted extractions were obtained very good results, the conventional solvent extraction followed with ultrasonication resulted with significant decrease of stilbene derivatives in plant extracts. According to the obtained results the leaves of Salviae officinalis contain resveratrol derivatives in amount high enough to be considered valuable source of these biologically active polyphenols.
