Sažetak
The aim of the study was to evaluate the current practice of screening for gestational diabetes in Croatia. Women referred during a five-year period (1989-1994) to the Vuk Vrhovac University Clinic for OGTT in pregnancy and whose results revealed impaired glucose tolerance or gestational diabetes mellitus, were contacted by phone or in writing and asked to provide data on pregnancy outcome. Data on additional randomly selected 60 women with normal OGTT were collected in the same way and used as control. Logistic regression analysis showed that only one fifth of the difference between the normal and impaired glucose tolerance in gestation could be explained by the best fitting combination of the risk factors of maternal age, obesity, family history and parity. These results additionally supported the recommendation to test all pregnant women in the third trimester, and not only those with recognized risk factors.
