Sažetak
High plasma homocysteine (Hcy) level is a strong and independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Levels of Hcy >10 µ mol/L have been associated with a doubling cardiovascular risk. Hcy can be deleterious even at moderate levels, such as those achieved during aging. The aim of this study was to determine and put in correlation the plasma Hcy level and some anthropometric parameters: body mass index (BMI), waist to hip ratio (WHR) and percentage of body fat (% BF) in women older than 50 years, because the Hcy levels tend to rise with age. Subjects were 64 Croatian women older than 50 years (mean 64.5 years). Average Hcy level was 11.0 ± 3.01 µ mol/L. Hcy level >10 µ mol/L had 64.1 % of subjects. Hcy level was significantly correlated with age (r=0.60, p<0.05). Average BMI was 26.8 ± 4.44 kg/m2. Fifty eight % of the subjects were overweight and 24.0 % were obese according to BMI. WHR higher than 0.8 (apple shape) had 62.0 % of the subjects, and it is well known that they are at higher risk for cardiovascular disease. % BF higher than preferable range according to age had 82 % of the subjects. In conclusion, among all anthropometric parameters statistically significant correlation (p < 0.05) was determined only between plasma Hcy levels and % of body fat.
