Sažetak
The paper deals with the assessment of young learners in primary classess with particular reference to informal ways of assessment such as self- and peer-assessment and portfolio assessment as important parts of the Common European Framework of reference for Languages, the document which served as one of the starting points for developing the European Language Portfolio and the language part of the Croatian National Educational Standards. I gives an overview of traditional tests and performance-based tests, emphasizing the need for all teaching and learning to be meaningful and productive. Furthermore, it promotes the use of the portfolio as an informal way of assessment which could help learners and teachers to make the process of classroom assessment more flexible and easier to apply.
