Sažetak
SCUBA-diving is recognized as a factor of TMD. Design of the mouthpiece, stress, and water temperature may be the leading causes that make diving a factor of TMD. Objective of this research was to determine whether there was a significant difference in the prevalence of TMD in the professional diver population than in the general population using a standardised research protocol (RDC-TMD). A total of 60 individuals participated in the research: 31 diver (research group) and 29 individuals from the general population (control group). The standardized RDC-TMD protocol was used on both study groups. A specially designed questionnaire concerning diving and awareness of TMD symptoms in daily life, during and after diving was used on the research group. Pearson’ s chi-square, One-Way ANOVA, Friedman and McNemar’ s tests were used for statistical analysis. The research group consisted of 87% males with a mean age of 35, 1 years. The control group consisted of 55% males with a mean age of 28, 1 years. The results have shown there is a statistically significant difference (p≤ 0, 05) between the group 2 and group 3 Axis I diagnoses of the RDC-TMD in the research group than in the control group. The degree of chronic pain has also been found to be statistically more significant (p≤ 0, 05) in the research group then in the control group. The awareness of TMD symptoms is found to be more significant in daily life then during or after the dive. No statistically significant results have been found linking dive duration, dives per year and number of diving service years with TMD incidence. Professional divers are indeed a risk group for the development or aggravation of existing TMD.
