Sažetak
The first contact of users with the library starts at information desk, in other words, if we want to use library services, we must present our 10 and fill in a form providing our name, lD number, address, telephone number, e-mail address, etc. Libraries should keep data for statistical purposes, users registration, information protection of library holdings and acquisition purposes. Also, personal data allow libraries to contact users, if necessary, to send them notices about events going on in libraries or to send them notices about overdue books. Users offer their data with confidence and assume that they are completely safe and unavailable to either other users or unauthorised library employees. We performed a research in five main public libraries in Zagreb. The research will be based on a questionnaire in which we intend to find out: what personal data are protected ; who and for what purpose has access to these data ; how data are protected ; is protection regulated by any library document ; is the in-library use of material also registered and protected ; etc. The results of the research can help in determining whether the library policy towards personal data protection should be changed when Croatia enters the EU
