Sažetak
The effect of propolis preparation (water and ethanolic extract) and related polyphenolic compounds and  -radiation-induced DNA strand breaks in different tissues of tumor-bearing mice was studied by comet assay. CBA mice were injected intraperitoneally (ip) with two preparation of propolis (water and ethanolic extract of propolis: WSDP or EEP) and propolis related polyphenolic compounds (caffeic acid, naringin, chrysin, quercetin) at dose of 100 mg kg-1 body weight for 3 conecutive days before or after ip inoculation 2 x 106 of Ehrlich ascites tumor (EAT) cells and exposed to the whole body  -irradiation (WBI). Synthetic protector 2-aminoetilizotiourea dihidrobromid (AET) was used as a positiv control. Mice were exposed to WBI with 4 Gy of 60Co  -radiation source. One hour and/or 72 hour after iradiation we examined DNA damage of leucocytes and tumor cells using the single-cell gel electophoresis assay (comet assay). Propolis and related polyphenolic compounds combined with radiation inhanced radiosensitivity in tumor cells and protected blood cells. It is possible that synergism beetween radiotherapy and polyphenolic compounds due to selectively induce apoptosis in cancer cells and/or markedly different repair caracteristics of normal and tumor cells.
