Sažetak
Effect of anticancer drug Irinotecan combined with water-soluble derivate of propolis (WSDP), ethanolic extract of propolis (EEP), Quercetin, or Naringin, components of propolis, on the growth of Ehrlich ascites tumor (EAT) and life span of tumor bearing Swiss albino mice was studied. Test components were given to mice intraperitonealy (ip) at dose of 100 mg kg-1 for three consecutive days before ip injection of EAT cells (1x106). Irinotecan was administered ip at dose of 50 mg kg-1 on days 1, 13, and 19 after tumor cell inoculation. The results clearly demonstrate synergistic action of Irinotecan with test components on suppression of tumor growth ; test compounds combined with Irinotecan decreased tumor proliferation and increased survival time of treated mice. In addition, ip administered EEP with Irinotecan, significantly (p<0.05) increased life span as compared with Irinotecan given alone. These results suggest the benefits of potential clinical use of propolis preparations and related flavonoids in combination with chemotherapeutic agents in order to maximize antitumor activity and potentially minimize postchemotherapeutic deteriorated reactions.
