Sažetak
IS ENURESIS RECOGNISED AS A PROBLEM? ATTITUDE OF ENURETIC CHILDREN'S PARENTS. Vesna Jureša, A.Juriša Andrija Štampar School of Public Health Medical School University of Zagreb, Croatia OBJECTIVES: Our goal was to investigate what are parental coping strategies regarding nocturnal enuresis and whether the parents of enuretic children recognise enuresis as a child's, as well as a family problem. METHODS: The parent-completed questionnaire, that was given to parents of children enrolling or attending first grade primary school, consisted 12 questions regarding the enuresis problem in children and their families, and parental coping strategies. RESULTS:In the random stratificated sample there were 1213 children, from four largest cities (Zagreb, Rijeka, Split, Osijek) , 51, 4% boys and 48, 6% girls, most of them 6-year-olds( 34, 7%) and 7-year-olds(47, 1%). Enuresis problem was reported by parents of 112 children, 12, 2% boys and 9% girls, 16, 07% boys and 8, 9% girls wet their bed once a week. Primar enuresis have 26, 7% boys and 20, 5% girls . In the sample, 82, 1% boys and 79, 4% girls, have one enuretic family member, most often a brother for boys, sister for girls. Pharmacologic treatment is used by 2, 6% boys and 2, 6% girls, most often desmopressin, nonpharmacologic treatment tried up to 57, 1% children. Parents of 23, 2% boys and 15, 1% girls are not considering enuresis a problem although 28, 5% children missed some of the social activities. CONCLUSION: Enuresis is an important medical and psychosocial problem. Parents are still not recognizing the problem enough. Children are still missing important social activities due to the problem that can be, in our opinion, solved by using pharmacologic treatment for short period of dryness and by using other nonpharmacologic methods for long-term solutions. Informing and educating the parents is a priority.
