Sažetak
Olefin hydrocarbons, which are absent in crude oil, are shown in FCC gasoline fractions as the result of conversion processes. Since these fractions are used for blending the commercial automotive gasoline, knowledge of the composition of FCC gasoline is very important, especially the contents of olefins, due to their influence on octane number1. Chromatographic techniques are a useful tool in both quantitative and qualitative olefin determination in these fractions. The standard normal-phase high-performance liquid chromatography technique (NP HPLC) equipped with refractive index detector (RID) and silica or slightly modified silica columns, used for group- type hydrocarbon determination of light and heavy oil fractions, is not suitable for olefin determination, due to co-elution of olefins with paraffin. This problem was solved by using an additional detector that is sensitive and selective to olefins, but not to paraffin. Diode array detector (DAD) is a common additional detector hyphenated to NP-HPLC. The use of DAD eliminates the need for separation of olefins from paraffin, because paraffin is not active in the UV field. Individual composition of olefin fraction was determined and efficiency of HPLC separation between olefin and aromatic fractions was established.
