Sažetak
The 24-hour urine sample is considered as the most reliable material for testing various constituents in human urine. The aim of this study was to compare concentrations of five essential elements, calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), sodium (Na), potassium, and zinc (Zn) in both 24-hour and spot urine samples collected from the same adult female subjects. Urine samples were collected from 143 generally healthy women, aged 30 to 79 years. Elements were analysed by flame atomic absorption spectrometry and expressed as milligrams per gram creatinine. Spearman rank order correlations between 24-hour and spot urine were carried out for each element separately. All coefficients of correlation between 24-hout and spot urine of five measured elements and creatinine were statistically significant (p<0.05). The highest coefficient of correlation was obtained for Zn (0.637) and Mg (0.603) ; the others were for Na (0.452), K (0.396), and creatinine (0.217). The results show that for the five measured essential elements, spot urine sampling was reliable alternative in replacing tedious and impractical 24-hour urine collection.
