Sažetak
Lead and lead compounds are important pollutants in human living and working environment. Numerous studies have shown that lead adversely affects the nervous, haematopoietic, renal, endocrine and reproductive systems. The genotoxic effects of lead have been studied both in vivo and in vitro, but the published results are inconsistent. The aim of our study was to investigate the level of exposure to lead and its genotoxic effects in lymphocytes of occupationally exposed subjects. The study group consisted of 35 lead workers, 21 men and 14 women, and 35 control subjects matching in age, sex and the smoking habit. Blood lead concentrations were analysed using electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry. The comet assay was used to evaluate the primary DNA damage. Mean blood lead level in the exposed group was ten times as high as in controls (344 µ ; g/l vs. 36 µ ; g/l), but the mean tail length (TL) and tail moment (TM) did not differ between the studied groups (15.12 vs. 15.48 and 0.28 vs. 0.33, respectively). However, significantly higher values of TL and TM were observed in some individuals in the exposed group. Although men had significantly higher blood lead concentrations, women with significantly higher TL and TM values showed to be more susceptible to lead exposure.
