Sažetak
Among the many methods for the removal of heavy metals from aqueous solution, namely chemical precipitation, ion exchange, coagulation, solvent extraction, adsorption has been often used. An activated carbon is the most used adsorbent. However, because of its high cost the less expensive non-conventional adsorbents are being studied including their surface modification. This can be performed by adsorbing foreign organic compounds on the surface of carbon. The main objective of this work was investigation of possibility Ni+2 ions removal from aqueous solution by carbon black as non- conventional adsorbent. The carboxyl groups of adsorbed both acetic and citric acids have successfully modified carbon black surface so that more active carbon black is achieved. Comparisons of micrographs exhibits the morphology change of the surface matrix after treatment by acids. The carbon black surface becomes more homogeneous but its surface area is decreased. Dependence of Ni+2 adsorption capacity on iodine adsorption number are shown. The higher adsorption capacity of nickel ions was obtained using carbon black modified by citric acid.
