Sažetak
Calcium excretion in the 24-hour urine is routine laboratory parameter used in diagnosis and follow-up of osteoporosis and other metabolic bone disorders. Urinary excretion of calcium and other essential elements reflects also their dietary intake. Compliance of patients with 24-hour urine collection can pose a problem, and the procedure is impractical in field studies. Spot urine sampling is easier and more acceptable, but question emerges whether it is reliable enough to replace 24-hour urine sampling. The preliminary investigation aimed at evaluating whether concentration of calcium, zinc, magnesium, potassium and sodium in spot urine can be a reliable alternative to 24-hour urinary sampling. Twenty four-hour and spot urine samples were collected from each of 103 women, aged 20 to 80 years. Elements in urine were analysed by flame atomic absorption or emission spectrometry and data expressed in mg/g creatinine. Spearman's rank order correlations between 24-hour and spot urine samples in the same subject were statistically significant (at p<0.01) for all analysed elements. Values of correlation coefficients in descending order were: 0.66 for zinc, 0.54 for calcium, 0.42 for magnesium, 0.41 for potassium, and 0.34 for sodium. It is concluded that 24-hour and spot urine excretion of each analysed essential element is correlated (although with various strength). More information is needed on dietary intake of measured elements and day-to-day mineral excretion variability to evaluate a reliability of spot urine as an alternative to 24-hour urine sampling in clinical practice and research.
