Sažetak
Sitting is the commonest bodily position of every pupil during classroom activities. But, sitting behaviour of the pupils are rarely observed as an important parameter in designing school furniture. This research focused primarily on the pupils' behaviour at work, their movements and frequent activities during usage of desks and chairs in primary school classrooms. The aim was to identify the exact requirements and parameters related to future design of school chairs and tables. The research was conducted in one elementary school in Zagreb (Croatia) with 18 pupils from 2 to 8 grades. The method employed was video recording. Forty three characteristic postures and semi-postures, separated in four main groups were recorded. The results showed major differences in the subjects’ behaviour and in the habits of using the task chair and desk with respect to age, sex, daytime, studied subjects, tasks and the teachers’ behaviour. As a conclusion, design of the school task furniture must take into account the analysis of characteristic postures of the pupils as one of the crucial design criteria and to be observed in 3D not only in 2D geometric space. Also, design, functionality and construction of the furniture must fit psychological, physical, social and cognitive aspects of their users.
