Sažetak
Humanely oriented schools are places that ensure positive learning and a psychologically and physically safe environment where support is offered to students in developing positive relationships with their school, family and community and where emphasis is placed on the students’ individual self-worth and value. The aim of this research was to determine some aspects that contribute to the students’ feelings of (in)security and (in)humane conduct. The findings will contribute in creating schools that are caring, civil and challenging both academically and behaviorally, namely in creating contemporary humane schools that satisfy all the educational and developmental needs of students. The research was conducted on 113 education majors pertaining to various years of study at the University of Rijeka - Faculty of Philosophy (Croatia). Likert’ s scaling model and an omnibus questionnaire were used for assessing the students’ perceptions of teachers’ interpersonal behavior and of safety at school. The results show that the majority of subjects that were tested find school to be an unsafe and inhumane place. Feelings of insecurity and to a certain degree lack of humanely behavior arise as a result of: insufficient care for the student’ s personal needs and problems, the lack of physical safety, detriment of physical and mental integrity, verbal conflicts, despise, indignity, labeling as well as the lack of good communications. The findings indicate the necessity of all those involved in the educational process to change their attitudes and actions mainly by creating environments that enable flexible and humane interpersonal behaviors, which in turn contribute to the uplifting of the care for students and their needs. The vision of a modern school is based on positive and humane relationships and attitudes as well as meeting the goals of helping students build character and mature into well-balanced individuals capable of achieving their highest potential.
