Sažetak
From 2004 a new approach towards CSF control has been implemented in Croatia. The legislative has been harmonised with EC Directives (2001/89/EC) and Decisions (2002/106/EC). The main point was to band vaccination against CSF that has been carried out for the past decades and to implement "stamping-out" as well as movement restrictions as the main measures of choice if CSF outbreak occurs. To have a better epidemiological view, two National programmes have been approved, one considering the domestic pig population and the other involving the monitoring of wild boars. Until 2006 no outbreak of the disease has been recognised. Probably due to previous vaccination and a high immunity rate among the susceptible categories. In July 2006 the first case of CSF suspicion has been recorded. Fattening pigs (6 months of age) held on an island on the river Danube, bordering Serbia, have shown signs of disease with a high mortality rate. The pigs had signs as ecchymosis, fever and diarrhoea. Some pigs died and laboratory diagnosis confirmed CSF. The pig owner acknowledged that some of his pigs were having similar signs for more than a month and that some were sold in Borovo. Epidemiology studies showed that the pigs were in direct or indirect contact with pigs from 17 other holdings. The disease spread to Vukovar and Trpinja in the same County and to Bijelo brdo in the neighbouring County. The disease was recognised in small holdings (up to 50 pigs) until October when a large pig farm has been infected. More than 9000 pigs were culled. Unfortunately, until the disease was recognised the farm distributed swill to pig producers in two other Counties in the central part of Croatia. In October and November new outbreaks of CSF were recognised in the regions where the disease was first diagnosed. In total, 91 localities were infected during 2006 and 11946 pigs were culled. In 2007 new outbreaks of CSF were diagnosed. The infection spread from the east of Croatia towards the north-west regions with the highest pig density. The spreading of infection was carried out by illegal transport of pigs from the infected area (eastern Slavonia). Due to markets that were held, CSF has spread to 10 Counties and was diagnosed on 89 locations where 3335 pigs were culled. Currently, 7 Counties have areas under restriction. Laboratory diagnosis was based on viral isolation, antigen detection (ELISA), RT-PCR and qRT-PCR. Serology was primarily based on antibody ELISA. Due to a large number of samples (more than 47000 only in May!) antibody ELISA was the test of choice to cancel the applied restrictions (on the basis of a 10% and 5% prevalence with a 95% certainty). However, a combination of antibody ELISA and qRT-PCR has shown to be the best test combination for preventing secondary outbreaks. CSF Croatian isolates from 2006 were sequenced (School of Veterinary Medicine, Institute of Virology, Hannover) and they have shown to belong to subgroup 2.3.
