Sažetak
The beginning of the process of transition to democracy in Croatia was heavily influenced by at least three factors: nation-building, mobilization for defence and privatization accompanied by sharp decline in economy. Under such circumstances, the role of education was reduced to strengthening national identity and sovereignty understood, among others, in terms of dismantling of the ideology of socialism (“ deideologization” ) and of strengthening the crucial dimensions of national identity, such as language, history, symbols and religion (“ Croatization” ). Due to the shift toward strengthening an ethnic-model of the nation, as well as due to a predominantly paternalistic political culture with strong children-dependency syndrome, the issue of preparing students for active and responsible citizenship was on the margins of the government interest.
