Sažetak
Forest vehicles, skidders and forwarders, cause soil disturbance due to forest operations. Forest soil disturbance can be broken down into three categories: compaction, rutting and soil displacement. This paper deals with the investigation of the impact of forwarder and skidder on soil compaction and rut formation on different forest soils in winter conditions. The investigation of the impact of forwarders on soil was performed on 2 test skid trails on flat terrain: soft and hard. The impact of skidders was investigated on 2 test skid trails on the same forest soil but with different slope gradient: 15 % and 30 %. The granulometric soil composition was determined for all test skid trails by taking soil samples and carrying out laboratory analyses. The measurement of penetration characteristics as well as rut formation was performed after multipass of the loaded forwarder and downhill and uphill skidding of the loaded skidder. Soil penetration resistance was measured by cone penetrometer. Rut depth profiles were measured in the middle of each skid trail. The depth of rut formation is much higher with soft soil. It increases with repeated forwarder passes, but the highest penetration of wheels into the soil occurs with the first pass. Also, the first pass of the skidder had the greatest influence on rut formation on both test skid trails. The change of penetration characteristics is higher with soft soil. Soil compaction was greater when the soil was not frozen. The highest level of compaction is achieved with the first pass of the skidder or forwarder. The research results could be used to determine ecologically acceptable rut depth or level of soil compaction during timber extraction on different forest soils.
