Sažetak
Metals used for replacement and/or repair of load bearing bones and teeth (such as titanium, titanium alloys, zirconia, etc) meet biomechanical requirements, but are bioinert or biotolerant and thus show poor integration with the surrounding bone. To facilitate integration of the implants into the surrounding hard tissue their surfaces have been coated with biocompatible material, mostly some form of calcium phosphate. Biomimetic coating methods, involving the deposition of calcium phosphate by immersion of pre-treated material at room or physiological temperature into simulated body fluid (SBF or modified SBF) 1, 2 have attracted considerable attention. Inclusion of bioactive organic macromolecules (drugs, growth factor, etc.) into the surface coatings has been attempted by co-precipitation with the inorganic phase2, but the process is relatively far from controlled mineralization and therefore unpredictable. In order to improve the performance of bioactive coatings, we have taken a second look at the ways that nature uses to form hard tissues, (biomineralization) in order to mimic some of the mechanisms involved.
