Sažetak
Current dietary guidelines recommend that approximately 45%-65% of the total daily calories come from carbohydrates. The aim of this study was to identify differences in grain intake (carbohydrates) and %BF among elderly according to BMI. The participants were recruited from 10 elderly nursing homes in Zagreb. Grain consumption data were collected using a multi pass 24-hour recall from a random sample of 315 elderly aged >65. The %BF was estimated using the Omron BF 300. According to BMI subjects are assigned in two groups: <25 kg/m2 and ≥ 25 kg/m2. Participants with BMI <25 kg/m2 (n=106) had lower but not statistically significant total grains intake and intake of grain foods (bread, pasta, whole-grains) then participants with BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2 (n=209). When calculating the intake of carbohydrates as percentage of total calorie intake (%kJ/day), 50.6% kJ/day was attributed to carbohydrate for lower BMI group, and 48.2% kJ/day in another BMI group. There was low statistically significant correlation between %BF and %kJ/day from carbohydrates among elderly with BMI <25 kg/m2 while for group with BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2 statistically significant correlation was not established. Carbohydrate intake was in accordance with recommendations for all elderly.
