Sažetak
This paper analyses gender and educational inequalities in health by measuring self-assessed health status. Material and Methods: Health status was measured using SF-36 questionnaire. The study was conducted in 2003, as a part of the National health survey. There were 9070 respondents (2890 men and 6180 women) aged 18 and over. Results: As far as gender distinction is concerned, the results showed statistically significant difference in self assessed health. The women consistently considered themselves less healthy ; they scored significantly lower than men on all 8 scales. With reference to the socio-economic inequalities, people with low income reported poorer health than those with high income. Furthermore, one generally finds larger gender differences within the lower educational groups. However, in this study, the difference on VT and BP scale remained through all educational levels. Conclusion: The researches show differences in self-reported health among genders in various populations independently of other life circumstances. On the other side, there are some researches that did not show such differences. This finding suggests that the differences in self reported health among women and men are not only biological question but more social and public health issue. There is a need for further research to explain what makes those health-related gender differences in one society.
