Sažetak
The essential activities of our network of excellence are the spreading of excellence and the organized education of young scientists (PhD students). Summer schools, workshops, mobility of young researchers and students within the network enable the acquisition of new experiences and the learning of new methods and approaches. This is also a significant contribution of our network to integration in the European Research Area (ERA). The development of the First EMBIC Summer School makes a significant contribution to two areas: the investigation of a medically and socially critical problem – female infertility – and the development of close scientific co-operation among laboratories studying reproductive immunology across the European Area. The format of the Summer School allows students to gain theoretical knowledge, have practical experience and interact with scientists who are experts in the reproductive immunology. This shared experience will form the basis for the future interactions and cooperative research projects as the students develop their scientific careers and gradually move into leadership positions in reproductive immunology. Such shared experiences and personal acquaintances make the basis for life-long scientific interactions. Science in general – and particularly a rapidly evolving field such as reproductive immunology – requires multiple interactions among research groups and among countries because no entity can have all the components necessary for the investigation of complex biological and medical problems. These scientific interactions will also contribute to the reinforcement of bonds among the European Union countries and will facilitate the solving of medical and public health problems which affect them all. The program (http://www.medri.hr/embic/) was a learning experience, and a group of leading European scientists in this field were speakers. Altogether 114 participants attended the School, out of which seventy-seven were EMBIC members. During six days, 54 contributions were presented. Twenty-seven lectures were delivered. The best students’ abstracts (17) were selected for oral presentation (SOP), and twelve contributions were discussed in the posterior session. Four students were supported by grants provided by the EC for young PhD students from other European countries: Kiev, Ukraine ; Sofia, Bulgaria ; and two from Belgrade, Serbia and Montenegro. The Abstract book was published. Thanks to both the lecturers and the PhD students who contributed actively, our mission was accomplished successfully. The Summer School was held in Malinska, a small picturesque village on the western shores of the island of Krk near the city of Rijeka. The Hotel Malin was an excellent host for both scientific and social activities during the meeting. An attractive social programme was organized that enabled students to have the opportunity to meet and have discussions with their course teachers and fellow participants. The whole atmosphere was friendly and stimulating especially in fostering a spirit of enthusiasm and unity. I wish to express our gratitude to Mrs. Ivana (Nina) Godnič, administrative secretary of the EMBIC team from Rijeka, for her immense contribution to the excellent organisation of the School. Nina was more than the administrative secretary of the school: she prepared all the materials, took care of every participant, and received many beautiful letters of gratitude from the participants. As a Rector of the University of Rijeka and a Team Leader of the European Network of Excellence, I am proud that we also organized in Rijeka on March 23-24, 2002 the First Meeting of the Initiative Group to work on the application for the EU FP6 project. I shared this idea with Gerard Chaouat and Francesco Tedesco, and we invited colleagues from nine European groups to attend this first meeting. The EMBIC (Network of Excellence) and the First EMBIC School are clear evidence that this was an excellent idea. Daniel Rukavina
